From December to May , Migratory period of humpback whales

From December to May, humpback whales come to mate in the warm waters of the Caribbean. You may have the chance to observe them or to enjoy their song if you dive during this period. The mating display is very demonstrative: the males jump, stand upright or strike the surface of the water with their flippers.

The Cousteau Reserve

The National Park of Guadeloupe is a protected marine area located mainly in the town of Bouillante and partly in that of Pointe-Noire, on the leeward coast of the island of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe. Covering approximately 400 hectares around the Pigeon islets, facing Malendure beach, the area helps to protect the seabed and limit fishing.

We go there once or several times a week during the high season.

Resumption of turtle safaris on Tuesdays and Saturdays - Departure from Deshaies for an afternoon snorkeling on the Petit Malendure and the coral reefs of the Pigeon islands.

Project AWARE

Project AWARE ( Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility, and Education) is a foundation created in 1989 by PADI. Following the growing observation of the degradation of coral reefs   certain divers reacted and decided to work for the protection of the seabed. The degradation is mainly caused by uncontrolled scuba diving activities. The role of this foundation is to make divers aware of the importance of managing their diving on the ecosystem.

Sunscreens, a poison for coral reefs

Experiments have been carried out in different seas around the world and have shown that certain UV (ultraviolet) filtering components contained in many sunscreens can stimulate the development of infections that destroy the famous zooxantella, a microalgae that lives in symbiosis with the coral and which is necessary for its development. So the coral bleaches and dies.

Fortunately, there are sunscreens with zinc or titanium mineral filters that are safe, the minerals do not penetrate the skin and do not cause allergies. They are designed to limit impacts on marine ecosystems.

UntoldStories
